Health and Safety

All children must have a current physical form (within the last year) on file at the center. State statute: All children entering our program must have a doctor’s note stating that he/she has had the chicken pox or proof of immunity to chicken pox. All immunizations must be up-to-date.

In case of injury to a child during day care hours, a staff member will assess injury and parents will be notified immediately. Staff will contact the nurse consultant if necessary and appropriate action will be taken. In case of a serious emergency, Curley’s Kids Care will transport child by ambulance or other appropriate conveyance to nearest hospital or clinic, and parents would be notified as soon as possible.

Sick Child Policy

If a child becomes ill during day care hours, a staff member will assess the illness. Accidents will be documented and signed by a parent at pick-up. If the injury is serious, the parent will be notified immediately and advised of the symptoms. The child must be picked up within an hour. If the parent is unable to be reached, the person on the emergency list on the enrollment form will be called. The child being sent home may not return to Curley’s on the 2 nd day. On the 3 rd day, the child being sent home may re-enter the center when all symptoms have disappeared and the child’s spirit and energy are back to normal. (Board of Education Health Policy, which states that children may not return to Curley’s following a fever until the fever remains below 100 degrees for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol).

Your child should be kept at home if he/she has one or more of the following symptoms:

Administration of Medication

Curley’s Kids Care will partake in the administration of medication to children when requested by parents, such as inhalers, Epi-pens, non-prescription topical medications, and oral medications. (Such as Tylenol, cold & cough medications, Benadryl, etc.) For all medications, authorization forms must be completely filled out, signed by the pediatrician, and signed by the parent. The form must include the following information:

All medication must be in the original packaging, and be labeled with the child’s name and dosage. Only staff who have medication training will be allowed to give medication to children. Also, only staff who has Epi-pen training may give the Epi-pen injection if needed. Staff is trained by our nurse consultant, and is renewed every three years for administration of medication, and every year for injectables. All medication will be kept in the medication box that will be in the locked staff bathroom. Non-prescription topical medication shall be inaccessible in the original container, labeled with name and administration directions. Forms for suntan lotion, diaper rash cream, and lotions need to be filled out by parents, but do not have to be signed by a physician. Curley’s Kids Care will keep accurate documentation of all medications administered. Included in the documentation is:

Parents will be notified when medication is administered.

Discipline Policy

Discipline is a process in which a child learns to assert his/her own rights in an acceptable way. They need to recognize and honor the rights of others and to develop self-awareness and control. The center’s role is to establish an environment with a structured, program, which will eliminate potential problems. The role of the teacher is to help the child set limits for him/herself and handle physical, emotional, social and practical problems. The role of the parents is to work consistently with the staff and help their child to become a self-reliant and responsible individual. Physical punishment is not and will not be tolerated, nor will ridiculing, frightening or humiliating a child. Non-compliance by any staff member to the tenets of discipline policy will be subject to immediate dismissal.

At Curley’s, we believe in positive guidance techniques such as modeling, encouraging expected behavior, redirecting children to more acceptable activities, setting clear limits, and intervening to enforce consequences for unacceptable, harmful behavior. A consequence will be given for serious inappropriate behaviors (such as hurting another child or teacher). The type and/or length of the consequence will be in direct correlation to the seriousness of the inappropriate behavior .

It is the center’s policy that the staff member dealing with a discipline problem will remain calm, speak firmly and act consistently. The center’s progressive process of handling unacceptable behavior is to:

Snacks and Lunch

Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. Nutrition will be the heart of each snack. A 100% juice or milk or water will be served with such items as vegetable sticks, cheese, crackers and nuts. Children will help in the preparation, serving and clean up. Parents are asked to notify staff of any of their child’s special dietary needs and/or allergies.

Parents will provide breakfast and lunch. The day care will provide milk. We are asking all parents to provide nutritious breakfast/lunches to ensure good eating habits and good health. Label all lunch boxes please. During morning drop-off, a specific area will be designated for lunch drop-off. Please make sure to put an ice pack in the lunch box in order to keep food cold. Parents bringing in a special snack of their choice may celebrate birthdays. Please notify staff. The children will be given the choice of the special snack or the snack that would be normally served on that day.

Napping and resting

It is the programs belief that all children (3 years to 5 years) need a period of rest during their busy day. Children will rest on cots, and books will be provided for a quiet activity should the children have difficulty sleeping. Children need to bring to day care their own blanket and/or stuffed animal for naptime, which is left for the week. Every week, these two items should be brought home to be washed. Blankets/stuffed animals will be stored in your child’s locker. Cots will be disinfected daily. .

Clothing

Children are required to come to day care wearing “work” clothes because that is what their play is -- work. They will be busy jumping, running, painting, etc. They will be outside often, so please help your child dress appropriately according to the daily weather.

An extra set of clothes should be in their locker at all times and should include: underwear, socks, pants, shirt, sweater/sweat shirt . At the beginning of each season a notice will be sent home with reminders of appropriate clothing for outdoor play. Please mark child’s name in all clothing.

Toys

The center will provide each child with enough materials and “toys” to play with during the course of the day.  All personal toys including stuffed animals, should be kept at home. Each classroom has a show and share day in which they may bring in an item from home. Please see your child’s teacher for days and times.

Parent Involvement

Parents are welcome visitors their child’s program at anytime during the day cares hours. Curley’s strongly encourages parents to be involved in their children’s daily lives here at the center. If a parent would like to share their talent or would like to donate toys or materials (paper, and so on) we would be appreciative. Communication between parents and teachers is essential to a child’s experience with in a childcare center.

Confidentiality

Curley’s Kids Care utilizes the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. This document speaks to the ethical responsibilities and confidentiality concerning children, families, colleagues, employers, and our community.

Community Resources

Curley’s Kids Care has many resources that can be helpful to parents. At the front entrance is a parent area with information and brochures of various resources. The director also has an extensive list of community resources that may be helpful. Your child’s teacher can also be very helpful in finding information regarding community resources. Each families individual cultural and linguistic needs are respected when connecting families to these resources.

Security

Everyone is required to use the main front entrance to enter and exit the building. This is for security purposes. Using other doors to enter or exit will not be tolerated. This is for your child’s own safety. Thank you. Each family will receive their own security code to access the building. We ask that you only give this code to anyone who will be regularly picking up your child. No one is allowed to access the playground without first entering the building. Parents must come through building and access the playground through the rear classroom exits.

Any person picking up a child will need to show photo identification, and must have, in writing, permission to pick up a child. This includes parents that we are meeting for the first time.

Curley’s also has closed circuit video surveillance in the entrance of the building. We are able to see who is entering and exiting our building at all times.

Parent Communication

Everyday parents will be advised, verbally or in writing about their child’s day. In return, the staff hopes you will share any information or concerns regarding your child

Bulletin boards are situated by the entrance of each classroom, that outline the center’s lesson plans for the week and any additional information that would be important to the child’s schedule at the day care. At the front entrance there is a bulletin board with classroom schedules, snack menus, center closings, the public school calendar, and any other important parent information. Also posted throughout the front entrance is information regarding liscencing, complaint procedures, and other documents.

The center has a library of articles and references on a variety of topics available concerning each age group we service. We also have on file community resources and referrals available. A newsletter will be instituted to keep parents aware of the center’s program, concerns and special events.

Teacher conferences will be set up in February and March of each year to review your child’s development. At anytime, you as a parent should feel free to talk to the staff about your child’s development.

Program evaluations will be done yearly in February/March. These are important to help keep parents informed and to help us keep up to date on any issues parents may want to bring to our attention.

We encourage parents to come to us with any concerns immediately so that we may remedy the situation.
